Wildfire Control verses Conservation.

As the 2006 wild fire that consumed  most of Pioneertown and other serious fires that have effected areas of the hi desert have shown, one can never be too careful about fires, particularly in places subject to strong winds, like on occasion in Joshua Tree.  Much of the land on the south side of Joshua Tree are in a "fire hazard overly" and thus added care must be taken.  In addition, wild fire risk is exponentially related to draught, something California has been experiencing more of in recent year.   The Ranch, in conjunction with local and state agencies, work to together  to help keep both  the ranch and community safe.
  • Fire access roads and breaks.  These roads provide access to emergency equipment and personnel to areas effected by fire and act as firebreaks inhibition the spread of fire.  Fire access roads are ranch conform to the minimum width standards standard required by the fire marshal.
  • Control burning of organic materials restricted to periods allowed by our agricultural burn permit and notification of local fire agency.
  • In areas where human and animal safety are a concern, we remove dead trees, dead branches from trees and brush to inhibit the spread of wild fire.

The most fireproof setting is one devoid of all organic material.  While nothing would burn, it would not be a very pleasant place to enjoy.  We believe that the solution coexisting in a natural environment is sticking a balance between the competing issues and concerns.

Scenic Views & Commitment to Rural Values

Much of areas surrounding Quail Springs Road has been designated a scenic corridor by the County of San Bernardino.  We at the Ranch honor to be part of such a venerable designation.  We confirm our commitment to ensuring that
  • the area of natural beauty that can be seen from this road will continue to be seen and that
  • the areas of the ranch immediately adjacent to the road are kept in a manner that enhance rural values of the other rurally zone land in the area leading up to the National Park.

Equestrian Access - Use of Public Roads -  Concern & Complaints

Equestrians must be mindful that not everyone appreciates horse with the same enthusiasm that they do.   In fact, many people consider horses a nuisance and an unwelcome addition to public roads. The Ranch continues to work with local land owners and concerned citizens about public and private access.  While the equestrians that raise and train horses at the Ranch can not be responsible for action by the "non ranch riders" in Joshua Tree, "ranch riders" and "ranch management" want to accept the responsibility of being a sounding board for community concern.  If you have a concern or or a complaint, please e-mail Concerns&Complaints@JoshuaTreeRanch.Com    Also see Land Use.

Farm and Ranch Animal Protection

Joshua Tree has numerous predators that pose some mortal threats to animal if not addressed.  Grown horses are generally fine but ranch ducks, goats, and newborn horses are at risk from the assortment of hawks, other birds of prey, Coyotes, and local Bobcats.  We have seen cougars in areas where we ride but never near the ranch.  This is probably a good thing, since a cougar would probably have there way.  Anyway, we keep the animal we believe are most at animals at risk in predator proof enclosures. For more information see ducks and fish.
